VoIP Phone service

December 15, 2008 · Filed Under VoIP Technology · 2 Comments
VoIP ( Voice over Internet Protocol ) is a new technology that takes advantage of internet and wireless communication technologies to transmit voice to long distances. Traditional telephone network will charge high rates to make long distance calls. This is because of the maintenance cost involved with the infrastructure that was used to transmit voice data. Typically, the entire cable lines have to be maintained when you wish to call from one country to another. As a result of globalization, frequent long distance calling has to be done and VoIP made this task inexpensive. VoIP uses existing communication infrastructure and routes phone calls using existing networks, thereby avoiding duplicate networks.

The protocol for VoIP has been developed early in 1973, but only during recent years that millions of people all over the world recognized the importance of VoIP. When several VoIP providers entered into the market, they slashed the calling prices down further, making VoIP, the easiest technology to make long distance calls. The main advantage with VoIP providers is that you don’t have to buy any new phone equipment. The same traditional phone can be used to make long distance calls using internet when the phone is connected to internet.

The VoIP providers developed VoIP software that can be installed in your computer to call land lines and mobile phones in any part of the world. With the VOIP software, you don’t even need a telephone to call other traditional telephones. The voice data is converted into data packets and they are transmitted over internet. Based on the destination device, the packets are switched to either wired or wireless networks. The use of existing infrastructure and interoperability has made VoIP technology, an integral part of every organization involved in global business.

The quality of VoIP calls is outstanding compared to the traditional telephone network. Some times, delay may be present in VoIP calls, but this delay is mainly because of the internet connection that is used. When a reasonably fast connection is used for VoIP calls, there is almost no network latency.

People are always looking for cheap communitarian and free VoIP solutions are available now. Free VoIP allows you to call another computer at zero cost. When the same VoIP software is used by your friend, you can talk to him for free irrespective of the location. If you want to call landlines or mobile phones, you have to pay a small fee which is much less compared to the bills that you would get with your traditional telephones. The exceptional quality and inexpensive VoIP calls rate has motivated many people to replace their traditional telephones with VoIP solutions.

How to secure wireless network ?

December 11, 2008 · Filed Under Wi-Fi · Comment

Wireless security ensures that unauthorized access to wireless networks is restricted. In the modern technological world, wireless network has become very common in the organizations. This mobile networking, simplified connectivity, but the number of security issues has increased. The integration of wired and wireless networks has created a comfortable platform for intelligent crackers to track the sensitive data of wired network by gaining access to wireless devices.

In most of the wireless networking, there will be a centralized access point called router that enables connectivity among all wireless devices. The system can be made more flexible by deploying ad hoc networks where there are no centralized access points. In that case, the only possible way to secure data is to use strong encryption algorithm to encrypt data before transmitting it.

Several standards have been developed to ensure securing wirelessWireless Security networks. All the LAN devices that are connected to the wireless network must be secured. The users who gain access to the wireless network have to be educated about the legal ways to enter and secure wireless network. The whole network has to be monitored actively to find bogus injection or security breach.

Wifi networking is an eminent networking technology build on basic wireless networking. Wifi ensures connectivity between mobile devices at any time and at any place. Any device with Wifi card can now connect to a wireless access point which is basically a router connected to some other form of network. Wifi connectivity is now offered in most of the public places where the access point is connected to internet. With this networking ability, you can use Wifi card in your laptop, get connected to the wireless hotspot, and start browsing internet at great speeds. Radio waves are used in Wifi technology and these waves can handle large amount of data at a faster rate.

Wifi networks are subjected to more security threats because any device that enters into the accessible distance of wireless access point can get access to the whole network. In this case, if the wireless access point is compromised, all the data transfer that occurs through the network can be easily monitored. With the early 802.11 standard, access to a secure Wifi network is restricted by checking the Mac address of the wireless devices with a prefabricated list of authorized users. The newer IEEE 802.11i encryption standard resolves most of the security loop holes in Wifi networking. If the network in an organization handles sensitive data, it becomes important to deploy personalized security measures to prevent unauthorized access.

Few simple steps to secure your Wifi network

1. If you are using Wifi Modem for your broadband connection for your desktop PC connected using Ethernet cable, disable the wireless option in modem properties. As most of the modems come up with wireless facility enabled while manufacturing.Chances are their your neighbor can easily access your wifi network.

2. If you are really enjoying your wifi connection in your laptop in your office or home, make sure that you put WEP key in your modem. As it will block  unauthorized person to view or use your wifi network.

3. Switch Off your wifi modem, while your not using it, or leaving your office. Saves you electricity bill as well as secures your wireless network.

Facing problems using FTP server on Your broadband ?

December 6, 2008 · Filed Under Broadband Problems · 2 Comments
As telecom professional I have to face few tricky questions from our customers. Here is one of our customer’s problem using his broadband connection.

” I can’t connect to my FTP server while using my ADSL modem in PPPoE mode, while in Bridge mode it works normally “

How to tackle this problem:

First let me tell you that your ADSL modem works in two modes
1. Bridge mode or also called as dial up mode : In this Bridge mode then the WAN ip (Internet IP ) is assigned directly to your PC.

2. PPPoE mode ( or Always on mode ): In this mode WAN IP  is assigned to DSL Router. The communication between PC and router is done by local(LAN) IP address.

You have to make your router virtual server and access your FTP server. For this you have to set the DHCP server ON your router.

How to enable DHCP ?

Here is an example of how to enable DHCP server on Huawei MT841 router.
Go to modem page: Enter the address in your address bar

http://192.168.1.1

Enter As:
Username: admin
Password: admin
Goto Basic > DHCP > under Server Config select> DHCP Server

Click Apply > Lastly Click on Save All and reboot your router.  You are done.

Why we should never overlook the harmful effects of Wi-Fi?

November 15, 2008 · Filed Under Wi-Fi · Comment
WIFI or wireless fidelity has come about with numerous advantages in the modern times. However, its disadvantages cannot be overlooked too. Although their counts are not many, still they can have a long lasting impact.

If the radio wave used to carry the information makes contact with the body, the latter takes this wave as some sort of foreign invader. When such things happen, some physiological changes occur in our body. Cell membrane happens to become hard and flexible, which eventually leads to the loosening of cell permeability.

This permeability loss in turn greatly affects the general metabolism of the body, as the free radicals and toxins build up inside the cell, which in turn hampers the functioning of the mitochondria, the energy house of the body.

Furthermore, DNA of the cell also gets damaged and breaks into small micronuclei. These micronuclei is said to be the precursor of the cancer formation. Hence, the question of death becomes a probability.

Still, there is no need to worry, as various steps have been taken to nullify this problem. Since, the modern times will be dependent heavily on this technology, you should be assured of having a safer environment provided with it.

How Wi-Fi works for a computer system?

November 6, 2008 · Filed Under Wi-Fi · Comment
Wi-Fi is a term shortened for “wireless fidelity”. In simple terms, it can be said that a computer would be able to connect to the internet without any cables or wires.

In its operation, Wi-Fi is similar to the cell phone. It receives and sends signals along with data in the manner similar to mobile networks.

In case of Wi-Fi, first the computer or the Bluetooth device transmits radio signals to the wireless routers. The wireless router can either be Wireless Local Area Network or Wireless Access Point. The received signals are then sent to the internet via a cable modem, after which you can easily connect yourself to the internet.

Broadband Wi-Fi also works in the same manner. The only difference is that the bandwidth for the signal transmission has increased, which eventually has provided the wireless world with a new dimension of internet surfing.
