Facing problems using FTP server on Your broadband ?

As telecom professional I have to face few tricky questions from our customers. Here is one of our customer’s problem using his broadband connection.

” I can’t connect to my FTP server while using my ADSL modem in PPPoE mode, while in Bridge mode it works normally “

How to tackle this problem:

First let me tell you that your ADSL modem works in two modes
1. Bridge mode or also called as dial up mode : In this Bridge mode then the WAN ip (Internet IP ) is assigned directly to your PC.

2. PPPoE mode ( or Always on mode ): In this mode WAN IP  is assigned to DSL Router. The communication between PC and router is done by local(LAN) IP address.

You have to make your router virtual server and access your FTP server. For this you have to set the DHCP server ON your router.

How to enable DHCP ?

Here is an example of how to enable DHCP server on Huawei MT841 router.
Go to modem page: Enter the address in your address bar

http://192.168.1.1
Enter As:
Username: admin
Password: admin
Goto Basic > DHCP > under Server Config select> DHCP Server

Click Apply > Lastly Click on Save All and reboot your router.  You are done.
